When the internet, and Razorfish, was very young, I wanted to create an online art gallery to showcase other people’s work and to make my own design experiments to add to my portfolio. The site was one of the first online galleries and parts of it are in the permanent collection of the SF MOMA.
There is quite a bit of mythology about the site. It was named as a tribute to Carl Sagan, who famously said this about our planet: “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
Yes, the logo bounced. It also blurred in and out of focus. It did lots of things. What is shown below are a bunch of excerpts from the site. You can see a version of it at www.thebluedot.com
